Marantochori

Municipality of Lefkada - Marantohori

After Contaraena the visitor meets the Marantochori, a village with tradition.

Near the village, in the place of Bissa, there is the monastery of Agios Georgios. Its foundation is estimated around the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century until 1620. This monastery was not large, but it was wealthy with many estates. The small church was extended to the west. It was full of frescoes of which few survive today. In 1922, according to local people, the church became a place of isolation for people who had contracted smallpox. After the epidemic for disinfection they hammered the walls and whitewashed them.

Part of the newer iconostasis of remarkable woodcarving art from the mid-18th century is preserved. There are two remarkable icons, of the Virgin Mary and Christ. At the sites of Marmara, Pyrgi and Kleismata, the Archaeological Service has identified remains of ancient towers. In the area there is also a small natural lake, the lake of Marantochori, an important wetland for many species of flora and fauna.
