Platypus

Municipality of Lefkada - Platystoma

The Platypus  were also a remnant village of the Turkish occupation and the occasional conquerors. After the union of the Ionian Islands with Greece, its inhabitants began to slowly abandon it. However, the massive movement of the inhabitants in the last 40 years to the village of Perigiali, give Platystoma today a picture of abandonment.

The bishop of Arta, Katochianos, descended from Platystoma during the years of Ali Pasha. Also from there came the famous bandit Psilias who was active at the end of the 19th century.th century where banditry was then a heroic way of life.

In the old administrative division 1866 - 1912 it belonged to the municipality of Karya, while now, due to the perigliou which is its area, it was placed in Elloimeno.

The monastery of the Red Church which belongs to Platystoma flourished in the 15th century.ο and 19ο century.

Part of its glory is still preserved today and the visitor can see from the precinct and the cells to the rooms and the main temple. Its name is mainly due to the red earth used as mortar for its construction.
