Castes

Municipality of Lefkada - Kastos

A small, green island with beautiful beaches that offers great tranquility to its visitors.

Ο Castes, or Kastos, is a small inhabited island in the Ionian Sea opposite the west coast of Aitoloakarnania, the port of Astakos, and south of the larger island of Kalamos, which is considered an appendage. There is a village of the same name on the island.

Kastos is the smallest inhabitable island of the Ionian Islands and was annexed to Greece in 1864. It used to be part of the Ithaca district of the prefecture of Lefkada with a population of 285 inhabitants in 1950, where there was a primary school.

The main products of this island are cereals, grapes and fine wine. Like the neighbouring Kalamos, it is connected to the coast of Aitoloakarnania by boats, from and to the opposite village of Mytikas.
