Η Vasiliki has experienced great tourist development. The beach of Vasiliki, which reaches the edge of the bay of Ponti and is one of the best in the Mediterranean for the sport of windsurfing, is a major attraction. It is rare that the favorable wind is not blowing in this place.
The wind comes from the high central mountains and descends into the void of the plain. Thus the sails of the sailboards are always full and develop high speeds, tearing up the deep blue sea. Hundreds of sports fanatics line up daily along the long beach of Vasiliki and indulge for hours in their favourite sport, offering the visitor a unique spectacle.
The port of Vassiliki is regularly connected with the islands of Ithaca and Kefalonia, serving many tourists who wish to visit other islands of the Ionian Sea. The area has been inhabited from very early times. Finds of the Palaeolithic and more of the Neolithic Period (about 3,500 BC) were discovered by Dorpfeld's investigations in the Choirospilia of Evgiros and are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Lefkada. According to the Archaeological Service, there are scattered ancient building remains in the valley of Vasiliki, which probably belong to an ancient city.
On the other side of Vasiliki, to the west, lies the peninsula and the cape of Lefkata. First we will meet the small beach of Plaka and then the steep and more impressive western coast of the island. The landscape is mountainous and wild, descending to the edge of the sea, where the white rocks struggle with the stormy sea. Wild and fascinating is the beauty of this landscape that the visitor approaches from the sea or from the land. Here, at the tip of Lefkata, the legend has the poet Sappho ending her life in despair from the passion of love. These white rocks also christened the island of Lefkada. This is one of the many versions of the origin of its name.
The whole area of Vasiliki has attractions to offer to visitors. It has the possibility of utilizing many trails, and is already offered for mountain biking and horseback riding.
