On the main road from Vasiliki to Lefkada the road passes through the village Kontaraena, many of whose houses are a remarkable example of rural houses of the area. In Kontaraina the visitor can admire the church of Panagia, one of the largest in the countryside with a height of more than 12 meters. The current church dates back to the mid-19th century. Ruins of the oldest one are located on its northeastern side.
Here is kept an icon of the Virgin Mary, despotic, work of P. Gennimata and Christ as King of Kings, a great traditional work of V. Sideris from 1870. Another despotic icon with obvious western influences is that of Christ with Martha. In the skyline of the church, the Evangelist Matthew watches his angel proclaiming the gospel to him. Another beautiful church in Kontaraina is Agios Spyridon. It is located in the center of the village and testifies to the earlier prosperity of the place. Its iconostasis, the work of Panos Prosalendis, is simple, plain and with light carvings. The icon of Agios Spyridon is by Ioannis Anagnostis, probably from Ithaca, from 1776.
Walking along the eastern coast after the bay of Vasiliki, the visitor encounters two wonderful sandy beaches, one better than the other. The first one is called Agiofili and the second one Ammouso. The usually calm and crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea invite the traveller to cool off in their embrace.
