Sterno

Municipality of Lefkada - Fterno

HISTORICAL DATA

The name of the village takes us back to ancient Greek origins but the more recent settlement of the inhabitants leads us to other historical conclusions.

The village has been inhabited at least since 16ο century but once the Venetians arrived they increased its population. Specifically, the adjective Armatas indicates mercenaries of the Venetian army who fought against the Turks and in return they got land of their own as well as money with the word «ARMATA» written on it, hence the adjective that they took Armataioi.

Also during the years of the Venetians, the Slavenites settled in the area. Their origin is from Sklavina in Etnania, which were burned by the Turks in 1690 and the inhabitants who survived came to Poros and Fterno and then to Katochori, where their place of origin gave them their surname.

FOLKLORE DATA

The folklore of the village is linked to the pastoral way of life that has been followed for all these centuries.

Animal theft has always been a necessary evil since it had been androgenized to the maximum extent.

Nowadays the village has changed its appearance with many streets, many new houses and many foreigners who have settled there. In the summer it is a remarkable tourist destination for both food and accommodation.
