Surely at one time there would have been a “Neo” village, judging by its name. But nowadays it is an old village.
The truth is that during the years of the dictatorship (1967 - 1974) the village was abandoned by the local inhabitants, who sought their fortune in the foothills of the mountain and specifically in the locations of Paleokatouna and Megalo Avlaki, taking advantage of the opportunities for economic development.
In the 1980s, however, a group of young people - urban challengers, according to others - bought old houses in the village and repaired them, fully respecting the traditional colour of the village. With the sensitivity with which they handled their communal space, they made it a remarkable tourist destination.
Apart from the traditional houses and the impressive view of the plain of the island, the visitor can see even the Panagia Evangelistria, the only church with a dome on the island, as well as the private museum of Panagiotis Tsatsoulas which contains copies of musical instruments from antiquity to the present day and a wealth of folklore material.
From Neochori comes the clarinetist Kostas Giaouzos - Mouzakis, who before the war until 1950 was considered one of the best clarinets in Greece.
