At a distance of 2 km from the town of Lefkada, from the town's olive grove to the foot of a picturesque hill, the village of Apolpenas -possibly the name of the village is connected with the cult in antiquity of the «Healer» Apollo (Apollo + paean).
The martyr's sacrifice of Priest Theoklitos Stravoskiadis during the struggles for the union of the Ionian Islands with mother Greece gives the village a good place in modern history.
In Apolpena in the west of the village just before the beach of Agios Ioannis (Ionian Sea) there is cave rich in stalactites, but still unused, an idyllic place for walks and recreation.
Within the administrative boundaries of Apolpena is the monastery of Hodegetria built in the middle of the 15th century by Eleni Paleologina. It has particularly curated masonry and its illustration is considered a rare example synthesis of byzantine and illiterate painting. The dismantled icons are kept in the Byzantine Museum of Athens where they have been exhibited.
